Plymouth’s largest rooftop solar PV installation reduces energy bills at city’s premier sporting venue

The Plymouth Life Centre takes plenty of energy to keep it running. With an Olympic swimming pool and a dive pool to heat, as well as a sports hall and a 150-station fitness suite, its power demands are substantial.

Following a competitive tender, CleanEarth was selected by Plymouth Energy Community (PEC) to install a 366 kWp solar system on the Life Centre’s roof.

According to CleanEarth’s Technical Director, Tristan Grimes, “the installation was one of the most technical and challenging we have completed to date.” The innovative design included a non-penetrative low-ballast mounting system, a perimeter guard-rail, and stairway access for ongoing operation and maintenance.

Plymouth Life Centre consumes 100% of the electricity generated by the system. And it needs every kilowatt to maintain everything to the standards expected by the 1 million+ visitors it receives each year.

Due to its use, Plymouth Life Centre consumes a huge amount of energy; these solar panels will save a significant amount on its energy bill as well as provide an example of community-owned renewable energy in action.
