Solar farm on old waste tip reduces carbon footprint of north Cornwall recycling centre

The three acre solar farm at St Eval Recycling Centre will enable the facility to reduce its carbon footprint by 6,000 tonnes over the next 20 years.

Comprising 2,400 panels with a total installed capacity of 620 kWp, the system will generate enough electricity to power the operation of the recycling centre, reducing their running costs and generating a new revenue stream, while also making a positive environmental statement.

The owners of St Eval Recycling Centre, Chris and Karen Prynn, were looking for a renewable project for their land and initially explored the opportunity for a wind turbine. However, due to the site’s proximity to a listed church they proceeded with a solar farm, which is banked around the edge and hidden from view.

CleanEarth own the solar farm and St Eval Recycling Centre use the majority of the generated electricity. This is supplied through a CleanEarth Power Purchase Agreement at a unit cost below the business’s standard import price.

The entire team at CleanEarth have been supportive and proactive from the beginning of the project. We have maintained business as usual on site and now have the peace of mind that we have reduced our carbon footprint for the next 25 years.
