Food supplier uses new roof work as opportunity to install solar PV

When their roof needed refurbishing, Fresh Island Foods seized the opportunity to add a solar PV system as part of the project.

The Sheffield-based company has been operating since 1986 as a family-owned and independent food supplier. Also members of the Sterling Supergroup, they’re busy supplying to the catering and foodservice industry.

The extensive nature of their wholesale and distribution operation necessitates a high level of energy usage. With the ever-present concern of energy cost volatility and the pressing issue of the climate crisis, Fresh Island Foods invested in solar PV to support their long-standing business.

They first came across CleanEarth Energy from the recommendation of Practical Roofing, providers of a professional and comprehensive range of roofing services. Fresh Island Foods was undergoing new roof works and took the opportunity to pursue solar as part of their wider site refurbishments.

To complete one seamless installation, we worked closely with Practical Roofing to co-ordinate with their scaffolding and building programmes. Our team followed on directly from the roof’s completion to install a 135 kW system that generates over 100,000 kWh of annual electricity – saving more than £580,000 in energy costs across the system’s lifetime and 580 tonnes of carbon to match.
