One of the country's oldest industrial sites invests in solar

With 300 years of history, Wilton Carpets has been operating from their Wilton facility since their earliest days. To make sure their legacy is fit for the future, they asked CleanEarth to install 308 solar PV panels onto the rooftop of one of the oldest industrial sites in the country.

Wilton Carpets’ journey takes them all the way from the Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace to now, building a greener future for their business by investing in sustainable business practices. Wilton Carpets are openly committed to transforming as much of their operations as possible: with long product lifespans, efforts towards fully recyclable packaging, and a sustainability improvement plan in place. And this latest project is the next step in their ongoing work.

To support Wilton Carpets in their efforts, CleanEarth’s in-house team designed and installed a 155kWp solar PV system on their facility’s rooftop. To accommodate this project, our team co-ordinated the structural reinforcement of the rooftop itself. All of this was completed within tight deadlines to adhere to the requirements of the project’s funding.

Now, the completed system will generate an annual 143,000kWh to be put to use as part of the energy mix powering their production. With this generation, Wilton Carpets will see carbon savings of 27 tonnes each year, adding up to 652 tonnes in the systems lifetime. They’ll see a payback period of 3.28 years and roughly £30,000 in yearly energy cost savings. This will grow to up to £675,000 of savings.

For Wilton Carpets, these carbon and cost savings were made more accessible through the support of a grant through the Wiltshire Council. This grant, though currently closed as of spring 2025, provided up to 50% of the costs of a solar PV system, with a maximum application amount of £30,000. These kinds of grants are instrumental in making renewable energy more accessible for businesses of any size, creating new opportunities for the wider industrial sector of Wiltshire to pursue energy security and decarbonisation.

Wilton Carpets are setting a strong example of sustainability, showcasing the accessibility of solar and the importance of maintaining history by preserving the future.
