Animal welfare and environmental welfare can often go hand-in-hand. And for Country Lane Foods with their Birds and The Bees range of eco-friendly eggs having a real impact, decarbonisation is a logical next step to support these efforts.
Country Lane Foods have been operating since 1993 and have been family run ever since. With a rich legacy and a future-focused mindset, Country Lane Foods wanted to take their sustainability efforts even further.
Their operations span between 1.2 and 1.5 million eggs processed every week, utilising state of the art machinery to finely check each one for the smallest of scratches. Powering precision like this requires a fair amount of energy, which in turn adds on to a business’s carbon footprint significantly. Now, this energy usage is supported by almost 120,000 kWh of annual low-carbon electricity, generated from Country Lane Foods own rooftop at their Liskeard premises.
Funded through the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Good Growth Fund, Country Lane Foods opted for a well-rounded set of solutions; a solar PV system comprised of 264 panels, a battery storage solution, and two 22kW EV chargers on site to support their business in embracing electric vehicle usage.
Overall, their system from CleanEarth Energy will be reducing their carbon impact by 27 tonnes each year, savings that will grow to 657 tonnes over time – the equivalent of over 330,000 litres of gasoline consumption. These savings take Country Lane Foods to the next level in their sustainability journey. And for Cornish industry, every tonne of carbon reductions takes the county further towards its net zero goals.
