Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm, best known for its Rattler Cider and beautiful commercial premises in Penhallow, Cornwall, is taking another significant step in its commitment to sustainability with solar PV from CleanEarth Energy.
Established in 1986 when their earliest trees were planted, Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm became the first independent cyder maker in Cornwall and the first distillery for 300 years. Famed for their Rattler Cider and still proudly family-owned Healey’s takes sustainability seriously, carrying on their legacy by keeping the land itself at the heart of operations.
Those operations can currently consume 1.4GW of annual energy, and Healey’s is committed to developing multiple carbon saving programs to account for this. For instance, they’ve installed six temperature-controlled cyder tanks with 100,000 litre capacity each. But their biggest sustainability impact comes from their renewable energy.
Their existing projects in wind and solar are offsetting around 39 tonnes of annual CO2, and now the CleanEarth team have installed a 510,000 kWh annual yield system that will add a further 97 tonnes to those reductions. This roof mount installation was designed and installed over three rooftops on their premises, navigating 9 different roof aspects. The generation from the 1,224 new solar PV panels will be going on to cover over 49% of Healey’s Cyder Farm’s annual energy requirements.
Cyder is sometimes referred to as the most carbon friendly alcoholic drink to produce – but energy consumption always remains. With consumer demand for sustainability rising and policies like SERC, it is crucial for renowned cyder makers like Healey’s Cornish Cyder Farm to take the lead in sustainability. Their new CleanEarth system is going to save a cumulative 2,325 tonnes of CO2 during its lifetime. Reductions like that, attached to a legacy like Healey’s, are truly impactful.
